The Ghanaian community in Ecuador may be young in its duration there, but it is slowly carving out a decent, above-average lifestyle that their friends and family members would be proud to know. As reported by Dr. Prince Atiku and Mercy Tebu, they mostly teach English in schools and are well paid compared to their peers to whom English is not their first language.
Often lumped with Afro Ecuadorians until they speak, at which time the respect level moves a notch or two upwards, the Ghanaians are building a close-knit community. How they got to Ecuador is not very clear, but our sources inform Ghobal News that it is very difficult to get to Ecuador from Ghana. It is hoped that, as they continue to excel, especially in teaching, more opportunities would open up in Ecuador for other aspiring teachers.
Although the community is young, one of them, John Yeboah (Ghanaian father and Ecuadorian mother), plays for the Ecuadorian National Soccer team. This suggests that either the father has been in Ecuador for over twenty years, or the Ecuadorian mother was in Ghana before they moved there. What is distinctively clear is that Ghanaians have not been in Ecuador long enough to have grandchildren.
